Bangladesh: Rawhide of sacrificial animals: COVID could land collectors in trouble

Published 25 Jun,2020 via The Financial Express - The government sat on Wednesday with the trade bodies to fix prices of rawhide of sacrificial animals ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

Traders, traders' associations and stakeholders of the two sectors attended the meeting.

Commerce secretary Jafar Uddin presided over the meeting.

When contacted, commerce secretary said, "We have held at a preparatory meeting in the ministry to fix the prices of rawhide of sacrificial animals."

"We discussed the preservation of rawhide of sacrificial animals. We also discussed bank loans and arrears of the past years," a meeting participant said.

The merchants demanded the payment of outstanding bills by the tanners. Presently, there is no sufficient fund to buy raw hide of sacrificial animals this year.

They alleged the wholesalers compel them to offer low prices or stop buying skins if they do not get dues from the tanners.

But tanners claimed that they had repaid the dues last year.

Presently, COVID-19 may continue before and after Eid-ul-Azha that will hamper the collection of rawhide.

Currently, 10 districts and different parts of the capital city are in red zones. For this, the collection of raw hide in the red zones is likely to be hampered during the festival.

But the rawhide will not be damaged, if the donors of sacrificial animals preserve their skins following the right process using required salt.

A meeting participant said the financial institutions division under the finance ministry will take necessary steps to make sure that the traders get banks loans.

During the last Eid-ul-Azha, the price of cowhide (salted/non-salted) was re-fixed at Tk 45-50 per sqft (square feet) in Dhaka and Tk 35-40 per sqft outside the capital during this Eid-ul-Azha.
