Mahathir Mohamad resigns as Malaysia’s prime minister

Mahathir Mohamad has resigned as prime minister of Malaysia.

In a statement today, the Prime Minister’s office said Mahathir sent his letter of resignation to the King, the constitutional monarch, at 1pm local time.

No reasons were given.

Mahathir has also quit as chair of the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu). Bersatu is part of the ruling coalition Pakatan Harapan that secured electoral victory in May 2018.

Bersatu has also pulled out of Pakatan Harapan, reported state news agency Bernama.

This leaves the coalition with three parties: PKR, DAP, and Amanah.
