Malaysian central bank names three new members to Shariah Advisory Council


Bank Negara Malaysia, the central bank, on Friday (November 1) announced the line-up of its Shariah Advisory Council for November 2019 to October 31, 2022.

The Shariah Advisory Council (SAC) is the highest authority for Shariah in relation to Islamic banking, takaful, and Islamic development finance institutions supervised by the central bank.

The SAC’s rulings are the reference for Islamic financial institutions in Malaysia and also serve as reference by the courts and arbitrators in adjudicating disputes or cases.

The SAC for the next three years will comprise nine Shariah scholars and practitioners, instead of ten in the previous Council.

Four departing individuals make way for three new faces. The Council now comprises:

1. Dr. Mohd Daud Bakar, Founder and Executive Chairman, Amanie Group

2. Prof. Dr. Ashraf Md. Hashim, Chief Executive Officer, ISRA International Consulting Sdn. Bhd. (IICSB)

3. Prof. Dr. Mohamad Akram Laldin, Executive Director, International Shariah Research Academy for Islamic Finance (ISRA)

4. Prof. Dr. Engku Rabiah Adawiah Engku Ali, Professor, Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance (IiBF), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM)

5. A. Aziz. A. Rahim, Chairman, Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) Malaysia

6. Burhanuddin Lukman, Head of Takaful Unit, International Shariah Research Academy for Islamic Finance (ISRA)

7. Dr. Haji Anhar Haji Opir (new), Deputy Mufti of Selangor, Selangor Mufti Department

8. Dr. Marjan Muhammad (new), Head of Quality Assurance, International Shariah Research Academy for Islamic Finance (ISRA)

9. Zainal Abidin Jamal (new, starts June 1, 2020), Founder and Senior Partner, Zainal Abidin & Co. (Advocates and Solicitors)

The following individuals are no longer with the SAC:

1. Ghazali Abdul Rahmad

2. Dr Asmadi Mohamed Naim

3. Dr Shamsiah Mohamad

4. Dr Zulkifli Mohamad al-Bakri
