16,000 pilgrims registered in first hours of umrah app launch – Makkah authority

16,000 umrah pilgrims registered in the first few hours of the launch of the new Etamarna app on Sunday (September 27).

The app, launched by the Saudi ministry of hajj and umrah, allows pilgrims and worshippers to book their umrah and prayer slots in Makkah's Masjid al Haram and the Prophet's mosque in Madinah.

The Makkah region authority said in a tweet on Monday (September 28) that reservations for the first ten days of the umrah are full.

Saudi authorities announced last week that umrah would resume in stages from October 4 after a seven-month suspension as part of efforts to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pilgrims from abroad will only be allowed in November.

The number of pilgrims overall will be capped as part of health and social distancing precautionary measures.
