55,000 livestock vaccinated in Muscat

Published 26 Dec,2020 via Muscat Daily - The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has completed the first phase of livestock vaccination in Muscat governorate as part of its National Project for Livestock Immunisation, with over 55,000 animals having being immunised.

The ministry’s veterinary team visited 573 breeders and vaccinated 33,238 animals (goats, sheep, cows and camels) in the wilayat of Seeb, and 24,319 animals in the wilayat of Amerat against diseases including intestinal poisoning, foot-and-mouth disease and rabies.

An official in the ministry said, “The campaign aims to immunise livestock, reduce infection and prevent common disease transmission between animals and human beings. The programme also aims to provide vaccination to the largest number to protect herds from epidemics, including plague, smallpox and foot-and-mouth disease that cause great economic losses.”

The first phase of vaccination programme began on September 15 and finished in mid December.

“The second phase of the programme will start this week and will continue until the end of April. It will cover all the targeted villages in the wilayats,” the official added.
