6 TV shows you do not want to miss this Ramadan


While Ramadan is famous for being the TV industry’s biggest season for drama and comedy productions, we’re going to put the regular entertainment aside and focus on the biggest shows that have an Islamic or social theme at the heart of them.

So here’s our list of the top TV shows to watch this Ramadan. Most of these can be found on various satellite channels as well as streamed online (some can even be found subtitled in English).

1. SONA’A EL AMAL

Based on the Mohammed Bin Rashid Global Initiatives and presented by MBC’s Ahmad AlShugairi, Sona’a El Amal, which means “Makers of Hope”, sheds light on the beacons of hope across the Arab world: men and women of all ages who work tirelessly to make a difference in their community.

2. GHARABEEB SOUD

Already one of the most talked-about series this month, Gharabeeb Soud, or “Black Crows”, is the first Arabic-language drama of its kind to explore the rise of extremism and just what happens behind the scenes. Starring a multinational cast from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Kuwait, Tunisia and Lebanon, the series, which is inspired by real stories and events, focuses on the tactics used to influence and recruit young men and women from across the Middle East as well as internationally.

3. AA’ZAM SAJEEN FY AL-TAREEKH

This programme, whose title translates into “The Greatest Prisoner in History”, revolves around the story of the Prophet Yusuf and is narrated by imam Dr Aa’id bin Abdullah Al-Qarni in an engaging and entertaining way that is accessible to all.

4. QOMRA 2

Following the success of the first season, Ahmad AlShugairi’s Qomra is back for a second this Ramadan. This programme focuses on social and humanitarian issues to motivate the public to create good in their community.

5. NABI AL-RAHMA W AL-TASAMOH

Presented by renowned scholar Amr Khaled, Nabi Al-Rahma W Al-Tasamoh, or “Prophet of Mercy and Tolerance”, tells the story of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from his birth to the migration to Medina, shedding light on his story in Mecca as well as exploring the elements of mercy and tolerance shown in his actions.

6. MIN AL SEFR

Presented by Moufid Al Nawesar, Min Al Sefr, meaning “From Zero”, recounts the stories of famous and successful people who left a mark in Saudi society, many of whom started their journey from scratch.
