Aquatic quarantine facility for shrimps in the offing in Oman

Published 12 Jul,2020 via Muscat Daily - The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MoAF) signed two agreements with Fisheries Development Company (FDO) on Sunday. The two pacts include the establishment and management of a national aquatic quarantine facility for shrimps broodstock, at an estimated cost of RO600,000, and the allotment of land for the construction of the quarantine facility.

The agreement includes building a quarantine facility with an annual capacity of about 16,000 pairs of shrimps, which is able to produce seeds to be used by shrimp aquaculture projects located across the sultanate.

The agreement was signed by H E Eng Yaqoub bin Khalfan bin Khamis al Busaidi undersecretary at the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries for Fisheries and by Sheikh Nasser Bin Sulaiman al Harthy, vice chairman, FDO.

The national aquatic quarantine facility for shrimps will be established in Rumais in the Wilayat of Barka. It will consists of three units, with each unit able to receive 750 fully-grown shrimps (male and female).

The ministry stated that the quarantine facility is one of the most important features of the bio-security measures in fish farming. It aims to receive, monitor and inspect shipments of shrimp broodstock imported from abroad for a specific period of time to ensure that they are free of any potential disease before being transferred to farms.
