Qatar’s biggest dairy company Baladna and largest meat supplier Widam have partnered to supply veal to the local market for the first time.
The two companies said in a bourse filing on Monday (Mar 9) that Baladna will supply the veal and Widam will start a new production line for meat. Widam will market the meat and distribute it domestically.
Mohammad Badr Al Sada, chairperson of Widam and vice-chair of Baladna, said the partnership is part of Qatar’s plan for self-sufficiency, and will support local production.
Baladna opened in 2014. In 2017 when a trade embargo was initiated against Qatar by Saudi Arabia and its allies, forcing a shortage of imports including dairy, Baladna mobilized to transform its business into a major industrial producer by flying in thousands of cattle. It is now Qatar’s largest dairy and beverage producer, supplying over 90% of the country’s fresh milk. The company recently completed a successful IPO.
Widam Food Company exclusively handles the Qatar government’s subsidisation of Australian meat. It also imports meats from other markets on a non-exclusive basis.
