Cape Town mosque closes after COVID-19 prompts South Africa to declare ‘national state of disaster’

One of Cape Town’s biggest mosques has temporarily closed as a precautionary measure to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

South African Broadcasting Corporation Western Cape said on its facebook page on Mar 15 that Masjidul Quds in Gatesville, Athlone, closed after the government banned gatherings of more than 100 people to curb the spread of COVID-19.

South Africa declared COVID-19 a national disaster on Mar 15 when its number of infected cases hit 61.

The country announced a total of 85 cases on the morning of Wednesday (Mar 18).

Among other measures, the government from Wednesday implemented a ban on arrivals of travellers from what it considers eight high-risk countries, the United Kingdom, United States, Italy, Iran, South Korea, Spain, Germany, and China. People who have visited these countries in the past 20 days will also be denied visas.
