Could a Levantine garment hub emerge from the ruins?
For generations, the Levant has been home to a skilled textile and garment industry. Aleppo, Syria, in particular, was once a major regional centre for fabrics and clothing, with spinning mills, weaving factories and embroidery workshops supporting employment and exports.
Years of conflict severely damaged this industrial base, disrupting factories, infrastructure and supply chains. Yet the skills and industrial knowledge have not disappeared - more so, there are signs that the sector could begin to rebuild.
A recent move by Turkish clothing giant LC Waikiki offers an intriguing glimpse of what that recovery could look like. The company has begun production at a factory in the Aleppo countryside, initially employing around 150 workers and reportedly planning to expand to 1,000.
