E-auction of livestock for Eid al Adha in Oman

Published 18 Jul,2020 via Muscat Daily - With Eid al Adha round the corner, there is always a rush to buy livestock for the sacrifice. However, this year, with the spread of the novel coronavirus, things are different, and authorities are making every effort to provide most commodities online.

To facilitate online delivery of animals, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MoFA), in cooperation with the online platform - Tharwa, will start e-auction of livestock from July 22 to 25. The auction will run in the wilayats of Nizwa, Barka, Bahla and Salalah.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, an official from MoFA said, 'Farmers and livestock keepers will be able to buy livestock online from the animal barns of the Agricultural and Animal Research Center in the four wilayats.

'The online auction will be for three days, from July 22-25, from 6am to 11pm. Every bidder must pay RO100 as a temporary insurance, to enter the auction, which will be refunded if a deal is not done.'

The official added, Tharwa serves as a virtual marketplace for suppliers and distributors of all kinds of fresh and processed meat and offer it to the consumers. Consumers from most governorates can log on to the website and order an animal, anytime.

Talking about the ministry's online services, he said that MoAF has organised many online services to help individuals and farmers to buy and sell over the Internet so as to reduce the economic impact of COVID-19. Recently, it had organised the 14th Omani Honey Market online and an e-auction for selling date palms, held over for five days from June 28 to July 2.

The official said that the ministry is making concerted efforts to provide the required quantities of livestock needed by the local market and maintain the supply chain of imported as well locally produced food commodities.
