How can the OIC increase food trade among member countries?
Food trade among the 57-member countries of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) was a low 22 percent in 2015.
In the same year, eight of the 10 largest food exporters to the OIC were non-OIC countries, with Brazil having a clear lead with 8.4 percent market share, equivalent to $15.9 billion, followed by India with $13 billion, and Argentina with $8.9 billion.
In order to increase intra-OIC food trade, our report "The OIC's Current and Potential Role in the Global Halal Food Trade" suggests several factors that must be addressed:
1. Identify areas of strength and expand capabilities, especially to understand the major demand segments and map those against domestic strengths;
2. Provide extensive marketing and financial support to domestic organisations to build a presence in high-value OIC countries; and
3. Establish a link to the global supply chain
