India issues export policy for halal meat products
India has issued policy conditions for the export of halal meat and its products, effective today.
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), said that specified meat and meat products can be exported as halal-certified to select countries, only if such goods are produced or processed and/or packaged in facilities certified under the 'India Conformity Assessment Scheme (I-CAS) - Halal' of the Quality Council of India.
The 15 target markets to which meat products can be exported include the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Oman, Malaysia, and Qatar.
The exporter must provide valid halal certificate issued under I-CAS by a certification body accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies to the buyer in the importing country.
The directive applies to fresh and frozen meat from bovine animals, sheep and goats, as well as meat products.
In addition to the I-CAS conformity, the producer, supplier or exporter must also meet the requirements of the importing country, as applicable, and must provide valid certifications to the buyer in the importing country issued by certification bodies approved under their halal system.
