Indonesia approves emergency use for Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine
Indonesia’s National Drug and Food Agency (BPOM) has given Emergency Use Authorization for the Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine.
In a press conference streamed online on Monday (Jan 11) BPOM said the Chinese-made vaccine has an efficacy rate of 65.3%, based on clinical trials in the Indonesian city of Bandung.
The vaccine, called Coronovac, was earlier passed as halal by Indonesia’s highest Islamic clerical body, MUI.
However, as of this writing, national halal certifier BPJPH had not officially signed off the vaccine.
Mass vaccination is scheduled to start on January 13 with President Joko Widodo receiving the first shot in Jakarta.
