Indonesia could reign as global modest fashion hub

Indonesia has a strong prospect of becoming the world’s modest fashion hub, a government official has said.

"Indonesia has a great opportunity to become the world's center of Shariah economy, including halal (products) as well as modest fashion," Maman Abdurrahman, Indonesia’s minister of micro, small, and medium enterprises, said.

His comments came at the opening of the Indonesia International Modest Fashion Festival (IN2MF) in Jakarta.

The country ranked third out of a list of 81 countries in the Global Islamic Economic Indicator Ranking last year. Indonesia also came in third in modest fashion, second in halal food, and fifth in halal pharmaceutical and cosmetic products.

Indonesia's modest fashion exports to Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member countries reached $540 million in 2022, making it one of the top 10 exporters to OIC countries, state-run news agency Antara reported.

The ministry and Bank Indonesia are collaborating to strengthen the country's modest fashion sector, including setting up a leather production house in Garut, West Java. This would serve as the centre for raw materials required for fashion products.

The ministry has also initiated the Young Designer Modest Fashion competition with the support of Bank Indonesia, the ministry of trade, and the Indonesia Fashion Chamber.
