Indonesia’s The Halal Boys eyeing move into Singapore

JAKARTA – Indonesia’s The Halal Boys is hoping to enter the Singapore market with one outlet hopefully by the end of this year, co-founder Astrid Angeline told Salaam Gateway. Angeline estimates the investment to be less than 1 billion Indonesian rupiah ($73,000).

Angeline said the company is exploring different options in Singapore, from higher-end locations down to those serving the lower-end price range. “We are looking for some good locations. We may open in Sentosa where there are hotels and attractions like Universal Studios. Or, maybe places like hawker centers (foodcourts),” said Angeline.

The Halal Boys is currently studying the legal requirements for starting a business in Singapore and it is also actively sourcing suppliers to support its business plan, said Angeline.

Angeline is confident The Halal Boys will do well across the border. “Singapore is very close to Indonesia in terms of distance and food taste. Many Indonesian food [outlets] are franchised in Singapore. We think Singapore is the right place [for The Halal Boys].”

With an eye on future expansion, Singapore, said Angeline, would also serve as a gateway to Malaysia, which is home to a big Muslim and halal food market.

Modeled after New York’s The Halal Guys, The Halal Boys was established in May last year and currently operates five outlets across Indonesia, with its core market in Jakarta. It also makes deliveries of its chicken or lamb on rice dishes, receiving 30,000 to 40,000 orders per month via third party food delivery mobile apps.
