Malaysia signs up for Madrid Protocol allowing businesses to register trademarks in 122 countries

Malaysia on December 27 became a contracting party to the Madrid Protocol that allows businesses to register their trademarks or brand names in 122 member countries.

The Madrid Protocol is an international trademark system administered by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). It allows businesses or companies to register their brand name or trademarks in member countries in which they would like to protect them.

Applications in Malaysia for international registration of a brand name or trademark can be filed with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia, reported state news agency Bernama on Dec 27 citing the minister of domestic trade and consumer affairs.

Bernama also reported the minister as saying the Madrid Protocol will help reduce business costs for local entrepreneurs, and enable the country to attract investments by facilitating the process of international trademark registration.

Around 10 Muslim-majority countries are contracting parties to the Madrid Protocol, including Bahrain, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Oman, and Turkey.
