Ministry calls on Omani farmers to cultivate lemon trees

Published 22 Nov,2020 via Muscat Daily - As part of its efforts to diversify agricultural crops and increase the national income, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has urged Omani farmers to plant lemon trees.

Speaking to Muscat Daily an official said the ministry will provide lemon seedlings free to farmers. The move is part of a project launched by the ministry to cultivate farms with various fruits such as lemons, dates and mangoes.

As per the ministry guidelines, the farmer must be an Omani and he should have a land not less than five acres and not more than ten with modern irrigation systems.

The official said the farmer must adhere to the correct agricultural instructions for growing the target crops. The farmer must also allow the ministry’s specialists to visit the site to ensure that it meets the stipulated conditions.

“The project will continue to help farmers grow more diverse crops in the various governorates of the sultanate to support achieve self-sufficiency.”

The ministry has produced 1,699,892 seedlings in the period from 2011 to 2018.

It is seeking to produce more seedlings to reduce the gap between local demand and supply, added the official.
