Oman and FAO sign pact to boost apiculture industry

Published 13 Feb,2021 via Muscat Daily - The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has signed an agreement with the office of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in Oman to promote and develop the apiculture industry in the sultanate.

The agreement will be implement in coordination with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority – Riyada - and funded by the Omani Indian Fertiliser Company.

Omani honey products are rapidly developing into a profitable business for thousands of apiarists actively involved in the industry. The ministry has organised honey markets since 2014; sales jumped by 15.7 per cent from 2018 to 2019.

By organising honey markets, the ministry has enhanced bee breeders’ skills, raised public awareness on the quality of honey products, and encouraged youths to engage in the industry.

‘The number of beekeepers in the sultanate reached 5,336 with 112,068 honeycombs that produced 672,208kg of honey in 2018. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources will continue to organise these markets to support jobseekers and beekeepers to sell their products,’ a ministry statement said.
