Oman supports World Heritage sites in East Africa

Published 31 Mar,2021 via Muscat Daily - A project to support capacity-building of World Heritage sites in East Africa financed by Oman has been launched under the aegis of Unesco at its World Heritage Centre in Paris.

Oman had signed an agreement with Unesco to provide support for capacity-building of nomination projects and promotion of World Heritage sites in five Eastern African countries of Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Somalia and Tanzania in January this year worth RO263,265.

The three-year capacity-building programme will improve representation of the Africa region on the World Heritage List not only by developing nomination dossiers and enhancing skills of heritage practitioners, but also by strengthening networks, sensitising actors in the field of cultural and natural heritage, and closer involvement of local communities and stakeholders in order to increase the number of East African World Heritage properties.

H E Dr Hamed al Hamami, Oman’s permanent representative to Unesco, reiterated the commitment of the sultanate to provide support to the Eastern Africa region in the implementation of the 1972 World Heritage Convention and emphasised that the launch of this project is a good start for stronger collaboration between the sultanate and the Eastern Africa region.

The ambassadors of the five countries expressed their gratitude for this support and acknowledged the activities of the programme.
