Omani waqf fund to convert mosques into green buildings powered by solar energy

Published 31 Mar,2021 via Muscat Daily - The Amana Waqf Funds Management Company has finalised the first of its investment projects which will convert buildings of mosques into green, environment-friendly units operated by solar power.

The project has been launched with an aim to transform mosques into environment-friendly buildings using clean solar energy and utilising the surplus to generate revenue for the Waqf establishment.

Under the project, Hassan bin Thabit Mosque in the wilayat of Seeb has been converted into a fully day-time solar powered mosque.

The mosque, which occupies an area of 130sqm, uses 10kW solar panels installed in cooperation with a firm classified under the category of small and medium enterprises.

The project cuts down power consumption in the prayer area by 40 per cent and generates a power surplus of 2 per cent.

Eng Yousef al Harthy, CEO of Amana Waqf Funds, said the initiative is in line with Oman Vision 2040 in establishing a sustainable environment.
