On World Food Day, FAO, WFP call for action to improve production, distribution systems
Published 15 Oct,2020 via The Jordan Times AMMAN — On October 16, World Food Day, celebrated in over 150 countries around the world, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Jordan are calling for action to improve food production and distribution systems to reduce waste, avoid alarming surges in the level of global hunger and help people better withstand shocks such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the ‘State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2020’ report produced by FAO, IFAD, UNICEF, WFP and WHO, over 2 billion people do not have regular access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food, according to a FAO statement.
It said that 135 million people across 55 countries and territories experience crisis levels of acute food insecurity and require urgent food, nutrition and livelihoods assistance.
