The Philippines has opened a national halal laboratory in a bid to strengthen compliance levels of locally-made products trageting international markets.

The Philippine National Halal Laboratory and Science Centre in Koronadal City in the province of South Cotabato was established by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

State news agency the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) reported on Feb 26 DOST regional director Zenaida Hadji Raof Laidan as saying that the facility aims to be a certified halal laboratory and serve as a clearing house for halal products coming in and out of the country.

The facility will follow the Standard and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) halal standards in areas including product testing and certification, according to PIA.

It will also conduct research and development, training and other related activities to boost the Philippines’ halal sectors, said PIA.
