Ready, steady, bake! 5 amazing desserts to make this Eid

Across the region, Eid al-Fitr is celebrated with many types of delicious desserts and baked goods. While buying readymade is always going to be more convenient, there’s something really special about getting together 1–2 days before Eid and making some desserts yourself.

So whether you’re an avid baker or just keen to get your kids involved, we’ve picked some simple Eid dessert ideas that you can whip up in an hour.

GHORAYEBA

A dish that Egyptians lay claim to, ghorayeba is a type of shortbread cookie often referred to as “sand biscuits” due to their crumbly, melt-in-the-mouth texture.

These are very easy to make and to put together. If you’re a beginner in the kitchen, we recommend having a go with this one.

What you’ll need:

  • 400g butter at room temperature
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • Flour to thicken dough
  • Vanilla essence or powder
  • Salt
  • Sprinkles or other candy for decoration

SHEER KHURMA

Fans of the Ramadan dish Umm Ali will love this for Eid. This Indian pudding, which translates into “milk with dates,” is usually served for breakfast after Eid prayers and throughout the day for visiting guests.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 litre full-fat milk
  • 75g pistachios
  • 75g almonds
  • 50g chironji
  • 10–12 strands of saffron
  • 1 whole cardamom (ground)
  • 2 whole cloves
  • 4 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 4 tbsp condensed milk
  • ¾ cup vermicelli

KAHK

Another type of cookie that’s popular during Eid Al-Fitr is kahk, or “kahk el Eid” (Eid cookies).

Much like ghorayeba, these biscuits also melt in the mouth and are served with tea or coffee for breakfast. Kahk can be made plain with sugar or transformed with a variety of fillings, including malban (similar to Turkish delight), dates or nuts.

What you’ll need:

  • 1kg flour
  • 500g boiled ghee (clarified butter)
  • 1 packet of yeast
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds
  • 2 tbsp “kahk essence” (if not available, substitute with vanilla extract)
  • Salt
  • ¼ cup warm water

DOODH DULARI

This colourful Pakistani milk dessert is very popular during Eid and is also commonly served at wedding receptions. Try and add as many colours as possible!

What you’ll need:

2 litres milk

½ cup coloured vermicelli

1 tbsp corn flour

1 packet strawberry jelly

1 packet green jelly

½ cup condensed milk

1 tin mixed-fruit cocktail

250g rubri

200g cream

250g small cham cham

UNICORN CHEESECAKE

And finally, for something a little more modern, this recipe by Saudi vlogger Drama Queen will leave your guests, especially the little ones, mighty impressed.

We love how simple this recipe is ... but the final result is 100-percent Instagram-worthy.

What you’ll need:

  • 2 packets of biscuits
  • 1 jar of Lotus biscuit spread
  • 2 single cream
  • 200g cream cheese
  • ½ cup sugar
  • Vanilla essence
  • 4 food colours (choose according to how you want it to look)
  • Sprinkles or other candy for decoration
