Saudi Arabia launches digital identity service for Hajj pilgrims

Saudi Arabia has introduced a digital identity service for Hajj pilgrims arriving in the kingdom this year.

The service, launched by the kingdom’s interior ministry, allows the pilgrims to electronically verify their identity through the Absher and Tawakkalna platforms to streamline their journeys.

The initiative, is part of the government's commitment to promote digital transformation, aligning with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, state-run Saudi Press Agency reported.

The digital service complements the Makkah Route Initiative, now in its sixth year, which also aims to facilitate transportation services for pilgrims.

Via the Makkah Route Initiative implemented by the kingdom’s interior ministry, all travel-related procedures of Hajj pilgrims are handled at the airport of departure via the General Directorate of Passports, including issuance of electronic Hajj visas and the gathering of their biometrics.

The facility is available through designated lounges at 11 airports across seven countries, including Morocco, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Turkiye, and Côte d'Ivoire.
