Saudi Arabia nods to meat imports from South Africa

Saudi Arabia has permitted the imports of meat and red meat products from South Africa, ending a 21-year ban.

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SAFDA) lifted the ban last week, following inspections conducted across South African abattoirs and feedlots in June this year.

The inspections ensured the products were in compliance with Saud Arabia’s market access protocols and halal certification.

Minister of South Africa’s department of trade, industry and competition, Ebrahim Patel, stated that the country already maintains a strong presence in markets such as the UAE and Malaysia.

“The Saudi market is valued at over $5 billion. We will work with [the] industry and retailers through store promotions and exhibiting at upcoming events in Saudi Arabia.”

During a state visit to the kingdom in October last year,  Patel and South Africa’s minister of agriculture, land reform and rural development, Thoko Didiza met Saudi’s investment minister Khalid Al Falih.

A task team was also established to facilitate access of meat and red meat products from South Africa into Saudi Arabia.

“We are hoping to also have Saudi Arabia grant access to our poultry meat, which they are still assessing,” added Didiza.
