Saudi Arabia's AlUla gears up to host Extreme E Racing series
Published 05 Mar,2021 via Asharq Alawsat (English Edition) - Saudi Arabia’s AlUla is gearing up to host the first race of the Extreme E racing series on April 3-4.
The event is co-organized by the Ministry of Sports and Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation (SAMF) and is in line with Saudi Vision 2030’s Quality of Life Program.
The race is the latest addition to the string of international sports events that the Kingdom has been hosting since 2018.
Ten teams from countries across the globe will participate in the Extreme E race. The event in AlUla is the first of five races that will be held in Saudi Arabia, Senegal in May, Greenland in August, Brazil in October and Argentina in December.
Extreme E is a new racing series in which electric SUVs compete in climate-affected destinations around the world with the aim of encouraging reliance on electric vehicles in pursuit of a better future for the planet.
Minister of Sports Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal said the Kingdom is eager to organize motorsports events, citing its hosting of the Dakar Rally and Formula E Diriyah earlier this year.
“We are looking forward to achieving a new success in motorsports,” he stressed.
He said the Kingdom has been able to organize sports events in spite of the challenges imposed by the coronavirus pandemic, citing the unwavering support of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense.
SAMF President, Prince Khalid bin Sultan Al-Abdullah Al-Faisal, said only three months into the year and 2021 has been monumental for motorsport in Saudi Arabia.
