Statement-making beauty looks to sport this Eid

We’re still trying to hold on to what’s left of the summer, but it’s never too early to pick the must-follow trends of the upcoming season. With New York Spring 2018 Fashion Week scheduled right after Eid, we spoke to the award-winning Egyptian fashion designer Sara Hegazy about what trends we can start to look out for that can easily be turned into a statement piece this Eid.

STRIPES

The one summer trend we can’t get enough of.

“Stripes are great if you wear them correctly. I always prefer simple pin stripes to wide, bold stripes because you can’t get bored of them easily,” said Sara. “Bold, bright-coloured stripes are surely in fashion, but not for long.”

Vertical, horizontal, wide, or fine: narrowing down the print that works for you is the key to pulling it off. Sara’s number one fashion tip on styling stripes? “Horizontal stripes make you look fatter! Vertical stripes will create the illusion that you’re taller and slimmer.”

RUFFLES

Frills and ruffles were all over the runways during NYFW. You can find them in all your favourite high-street brands and high-end couture labels. Why? They’re just fun!

Sara recommends styling an off-shoulder ruffle top by pairing it with a linen blend or silk shirt. “It’s too hot to put on too many layers … that’s where linen and silk shirts come in handy.”

BRIGHTS

The 2015 trend is back … unfortunately. The good news is, we won’t be seeing them in phosphoric green and yellow but in flashy blues, purples, yellow, and orange.

“Neons are probably the worst thing a hijabi can wear. They’re very hard to match with a veil, and too much of it looks odd. Personally, I prefer wearing bright colours like electric blue and canary yellow to neons,” Sara explained.

FLORALS

This classic summer staple always finds a way to win our hearts back. This year, we’ve seen an array of florals all over the runways and street style, but we’re not ready to say goodbye just yet. Sara told us that while florals are closely associated with the summer, the print can be worn long after the season’s over.

“Prints are great. If worn correctly, they could be the most fashionable, slimming trend of all time. I love to wear brocade and jacquard pants for chic dinner outings.”

ACCESSORIES

Don’t listen to your mama’s advice on matching your shoes to your belt, ladies; 2017–18 is all about mixing it up.

“I wear local, proudly,” said Sara when we asked her about her favourite handbag, shoes, and jewellery designers. From Azza Fahmy jewellery to Sami Amin bags, Sara recommends wearing unique statement pieces that grab attention and get you compliments.
