Top veggie dishes to try in Dubai
October is Vegetarian Awareness Month, and it ends with World Vegan Day on 1 November. To celebrate, we’ve rounded up some of the tastiest vegetarian meal options in the UAE that you can try.
Don’t live in Dubai? You can easily recreate or make your own versions of some of the options below!
BREAKFAST
Bistro Des Arts' poached egg and asparagus with tomato bearnaise sauce
A good vegetarian breakfast is usually not that difficult to master, but if you’re keen on avoiding cereal, oats or processed meats, then eggs are a good vegetarian alternative.
Bistro Des Arts in Dubai Marina is open daily from 7.30 am onwards, so it’s perfect for a morning meeting or meetup. Try its poached egg and asparagus, which is smothered in tomato bearnaise sauce.
MEXICAN
77 Veggie Boutique's burrito
Craving a burrito for lunch? Multi-cuisine vegetarian restaurant 77 Veggie Boutique has a yummy veggie alternative on its menu, and best of all, it comes wrapped in greens, so bonus points if you’re watching your refined carbs intake.
The Jumeirah Lake Towers eatery takes its name from the fact that it uses 77 types of vegetables in its dishes, so you certainly won’t be short of options for fillings.
SUSHI
Veggie sushi at Waka at the Oberoi Dubai
Planning on going fish-free for the month, but still need some sushi in your life? We’ve got you. Plenty of decent Japanese restaurants offer vegetarian options. But we get that the temptation there might be too strong and you’ll end up ordering tuna and salmon instead. So switch it up and head to Latin American cuisine favourite Waka at the Oberoi Dubai, where veggie sushi is on its green Harvest Menu. Non-Japanese-style delights on the menu include quinoa truffle risotto, mushroom ceviche and spicy corn empanadas.
INDIAN
Rasoi Ghar's sev tamatar
In our opinion, one of the best cuisine offerings in the UAE is, of course, Indian. Who doesn’t love a good curry? And thankfully, there are numerous vegetarian options in the city, one of our faves being Rasoi Ghar. They do a mean sev tamatar, a popular sweet and sour tomato curry prepared with tomato, sev, onion and spices. Yum!
COMFORT FOOD
El Sur's arroz meloso
This is the one to reach for if you really crave something meaty but don’t want to spoil your green month. El Sur’s gorgeous arroz meloso is a creamy rice dish that is flavoured with mushroom sauce and truffle paste and garnished with shimeji mushrooms, grated black truffle and shiso leaves. The mushroom texture offers you that meaty bite while the creamy consistency provides the comfort food factor.
MIDDLE EASTERN
Zaroob's koshari
And finally … how could we leave this one out? When it comes to our homegrown cuisine, we actually have quite a good deal on the vegetarian front.
From breakfast staples like ful and falafel to the range of meat-free appetisers such as hummus, labneh and vine leaves in olive oil, it’s easy to be spoilt for choice.
If you want to be adventurous with your main course, order koshari from Zaroob. But be warned: this Egyptian carb-laden dish, made with macaroni, rice, lentils, fried onion and tomato sauce, will have you heading straight to your bed. So don’t do it before an important meeting; you’d best leave it for the weekend instead. You’ve been warned.
