Turkey shuts down social spaces to curb COVID-19 spread

Turkey’s Interior Ministry on Monday (Mar 16) called for all cafes, theatres, gyms, cinemas, wedding halls, amusement parks, pools and other similar social spaces to be closed from Tuesday, reported local press, in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Turkey had a total of 47 confirmed COVID-19 cases as on Monday, with 29 new cases confirmed on the day.

Local news agency Daily Sabah reported that shopping malls and restaurants will operate normally.

The decision to shut all social spaces comes after the Diyanet, the Presidency of Religious Affairs, suspended all congregational prayers but kept mosques open for individual prayers.
