Art Jameel today announced the foundation's Arts Centre in Dubai will open in the winter of 2018.

The multi-disciplinary Jameel Arts Centre, at the tip of Dubai's Culture Village overlooking Dubai Creek, will be a 10,000 square metre three-storey space.

Designed by UK-based Serie Architects, it will include more than 1,000 square metres of dedicated gallery space, plus a 300-square metre open-access research centre dedicated to artists and cultural movements of the GCC and wider Arab world; additional flexible events spaces; a roof terrace designed for film screenings and events; an outdoor sculpture area; and a cafe, restaurant and bookshop.

Art Jameel is developing a Curatorial Council to advise on its exhibitions and collections programming, which at this stage includes Jessica Morgan, director of New York's Dia Art Foundation, and the curator and writer Murtaza Vali who is based between Sharjah and New York.

In the interim and lead-up to the Centre's opening, the non-profit Art Jameel has opened a temporary Project Space at the arts district Alserkal Avenue in Dubai that will host a programme of exhibitions, projects, talks and events.

The inaugural exhibition, featuring a five-channel video by Ramallah, Palestine-based artists Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme, is part of a series focussing on individual works from the Jameel Art Collection. The duo's work have been shown at the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009, the 2010 Liverpool Biennial, and the 4th Guanzhou Triennial in China in 2011.

COLLABORATION WITH THE MET

The organisation also announced the establishment of the Art Jameel Fund in collaboration with New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Fund will support activities related to the museum's Middle Eastern initiatives including acquisitions, global contemporary programming and Arabic translations of educational resources.

It most recently supported the museum's acquisition of two works by Egyptian artist Maha Maamoun: the single channel video 2026 (2010) and six photographs from a series entitled Domestic Tourism I (2005).

Art Jameel is an initiative of Community Jameel, the CSR arm of Abdul Latif Jameel, one of the world's leading independent Toyota distributors. The organisation has been a supporter of Islamic art for many years and in 2006 partnered with London's Victoria & Albert Museum to set up the Jameel Gallery of Islamic Art.

It is also known for The Jameel Prize, which was first awarded in 2009 and is held every two years, when works by nominated finalists are shown in an international touring exhibition.
