Woolworths Australia to sell own-brand halal-certified chicken to cater to growing Muslim customer base

Woolworths Australia will start selling its own brand of halal-certified chicken in its stores in response to changing customer demographics.

“We’re working to provide an increasingly diverse mix of customers with the right range of products in their local store,” a company spokesperson told Salaam Gateway.

The new range, called Al Sadiq, will be available in-store soon.

“Around the middle of this year we’ll introduce a new range of halal-certified chicken in around 20 Sydney stores, where there is high local demand for the product,” said the spokesperson.

Al Sadiq will be sold in Woolworths supermarkets with large Muslim communities nearby, such as Bankstown in Sydney, where one in three shoppers identify as halal eaters, said Woolworths.

The range was developed in consultation with the Islamic Council of Queensland that also provided the halal certification.

It will be produced by one supplier based in Queensland.

The supermarket also offers kosher chicken in around a dozen Sydney and Melbourne stores where there is a significant local Jewish population.

Woolworths will continue to sell its existing range of poultry products across Australia.

Woolworths is Australia's biggest supermarket chain, operating 995 stores across the country. It is part of the Woolworths Group that is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.
